Microsoft has officially released Windows 11, version 26H2, also known as the Windows 11 2026 Update, on September 29, 2026. The new version is now rolling out to eligible Windows 11 PCs running version 24H2 or 25H2. Unlike a traditional feature update that replaces large parts of the operating system, Windows 11 26H2 uses a smaller enablement package on supported 24H2 and 25H2 devices. Microsoft says the update activates features and improvements that were already delivered in previous monthly updates. This means the actual upgrade can be much quicker than a traditional Windows feature update, with a relatively small download and a single restart on eligible devices.
How to Get Windows 11 26H2
The easiest way to install Windows 11 26H2 is through Windows Update.
1. Open Windows Update
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Then go to: Settings > Windows Update
- Click Check for updates.

If Windows 11 26H2 is available for your PC, Windows Update should show an option to download and install the feature update.
2. Turn On “Get the Latest Updates as Soon as They’re Available”
If you don’t see Windows 11 26H2 yet, check the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available option.
- Go to: Settings > Windows Update
- Turn on: Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available
- Then select Check for updates again.
Microsoft specifically recommends enabling this option if you want to be among the first users to receive the latest non-security updates and features.
However, turning this option on does not necessarily force 26H2 onto every PC immediately. Microsoft is gradually expanding the rollout and can place a safeguard hold on devices where a known compatibility issue has been detected.
Who Can Get Windows 11 26H2?
Windows 11 26H2 is currently being offered to eligible devices running:
- Windows 11 version 25H2
- Windows 11 version 24H2
For these versions, Microsoft uses an enablement package because 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same servicing branch and underlying codebase.
A shared servicing branch simply means the same source code branch is being used to build and maintain multiple versions of Windows.

If Windows Update does not offer 26H2 yet, it does not necessarily mean something is wrong with your PC. The update is being released through a controlled rollout, and Microsoft may temporarily withhold it from some devices because of compatibility or other safeguard conditions.
How to Check Your Windows Version
If you’re not sure which version of Windows 11 you’re currently using:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type winver.
- Press Enter.
- Check the Windows version and OS build in the About Windows window.

You can also go to:
Settings > System > About
Look under Windows specifications.
What If Windows 11 26H2 Doesn’t Appear?
If 26H2 isn’t available yet, try these basic checks:
- Install all available Windows updates first.
- Restart your PC and check Windows Update again.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Make sure your PC has a stable internet connection.
- Check that Windows Update isn’t paused.
- Make sure there is enough free storage space.
- Check Microsoft’s Windows release health information for known compatibility holds.
Note: Microsoft is using a phased rollout and may delay the update for individual devices.
“During rollout, we might place safeguard holds on devices where we detect a known compatibility issue that could impact the update experience,” Microsoft explained.
What’s New in Windows 11 26H2?
Windows 11 26H2 isn’t a traditional feature-packed release with an entirely new interface. Instead, Microsoft describes it as bringing together Windows innovations, security improvements, and enhancements delivered through monthly updates over the past year.
If you have kept Windows 11 up to date, you may already have some of these features.
Microsoft’s updated Inside this update page highlights improvements across AI, Start, Taskbar, Search, File Explorer, accessibility, security, sharing and device support.
1. More Start Menu Customization
Windows 11 26H2 includes additional Start menu customization options.
Users can:
- Choose different Start menu sizes.
- Hide the profile picture.
- Hide the account name.
- Control the visibility of individual Start menu sections.
These options provide more control over how the Start menu is displayed.

2. Taskbar Can Be Moved
One of the more noticeable changes is additional taskbar customization. Windows 11 26H2 allows supported users to choose the taskbar’s position on the screen and use a more compact taskbar layout.
This is particularly useful for users who prefer the taskbar at the top or sides of the display rather than at the bottom.

3. Improved Windows Search
Microsoft has continued improving Windows Search.
The updated experience provides:
- Simplified search.
- Better results from frequently used indexed folders.
- Additional controls for web suggestions.
- Additional controls for Microsoft Store suggestions.

On supported Copilot+ PCs, Windows Search also uses on-device AI and semantic indexing to understand natural-language searches. For example, users can search for a setting using a description rather than remembering its exact name.
4. File Explorer Improvements
File Explorer gets AI actions for supported images, options to summarize OneDrive and SharePoint documents, quick actions for work and school accounts, and support for more archive formats.
Microsoft highlights more intuitive file-size displays and other improvements to file management.
On supported systems, File Explorer also includes improvements related to Microsoft 365 content, sharing, and backup experiences.
5. AI Features and Copilot+ PC Improvements
Windows 11 26H2 continues Microsoft’s expansion of AI features, although availability depends heavily on the hardware.
Copilot+ PCs receive additional capabilities including:
- AI-powered Windows Search.
- Recall.
- Click to Do.
- AI-powered image descriptions.
- Enhanced Voice Access.
- Windows Settings agent.
- Additional Copilot integrations.
The Windows Settings agent allows supported users to describe what they want to change in natural language and helps locate or manage settings. Microsoft notes that this experience currently depends on the device and language configuration.
6. Task Manager Gets Better NPU Monitoring
Windows 11 continues adding tools for monitoring AI workloads.
Task Manager can provide additional information about NPU activity, helping users understand how applications and processes are using the neural processing hardware on supported PCs.
This is particularly relevant for newer Copilot+ PCs with dedicated NPUs.
7. Accessibility Improvements
Windows 11 26H2 also includes several accessibility improvements.
Microsoft highlights:
- Expanded Voice Access language support.
- Improved Voice Isolation for voice commands.
- Better Magnifier controls.
- More detailed Narrator image descriptions.
- Additional Narrator navigation features.
- Voice Typing controls.
These improvements are designed to make Windows easier to control and use across different accessibility needs.
8. Windows Share Improvements
Windows Share gets additional functionality, including the ability to discover and install relevant apps directly from the share window in some work or school account scenarios.
Microsoft also highlights improvements for image editing before sharing, web-content previews, compression controls and easier file sharing with suggested apps.
9. Better Android Phone Integration
Microsoft is also expanding cross-device experiences between Windows PCs and Android phones.
The updated integration is designed to make it easier to continue activities between a compatible Android phone and Windows PC.
10. Windows Hello and Security Improvements
Security remains an important part of the Windows 11 26H2 release.
Microsoft highlights improvements to:
- Windows Hello.
- Fingerprint reader support.
- Smart App Control.
- Windows security protections.
- Passkey authentication experiences.
Windows 11 26H2 also includes the latest quality, reliability and security improvements delivered through the Windows servicing process.
11. Shared Audio and Camera Improvements
Windows 11 26H2 adds or enables additional device-related capabilities.
Shared Audio can allow supported Bluetooth audio technology to share audio across multiple devices simultaneously.
Microsoft also lists:
- Multi-App Camera support.
- Basic Camera mode.
- Improvements for compatible devices and drivers.
Availability can depend on the hardware and drivers installed on the PC.
12. Gaming and Networking Improvements
Microsoft also lists improvements for gaming, Xbox integration and networking.
Gaming changes are intended to provide a more streamlined experience on supported Windows devices, while networking improvements focus on reliability when accessing shared network resources and services.
Windows 11 26H2 Is More Than a Typical Feature Update
The most important thing to understand about Windows 11 26H2 is how Microsoft is delivering it.
For PCs already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, 26H2 is an enablement package rather than a complete operating system replacement.
Many of the required components are already installed through previous monthly updates. The 26H2 update essentially enables the appropriate features and changes and moves the device to the new supported Windows version.
Microsoft says this approach allows eligible PCs to complete the transition with a smaller download, quick installation and a single restart.
Windows 11 26H2 Support Lifecycle
Installing Windows 11 26H2 also starts a new support lifecycle for the supported editions.
Microsoft says:
- Windows 11 Home and Pro: 24 months of support.
- Windows 11 Enterprise and Education: 36 months of support.
This makes the version change important even for users who don’t notice many immediate visual differences after installing the update.
Should You Install Windows 11 26H2?
Windows 11 26H2 is now officially available, but the rollout is still controlled.
If Windows Update offers the update on your compatible PC, you can install it through the normal Windows Update process. If it isn’t offered yet, there is no need to manually force the upgrade immediately. Microsoft may be holding the update on your device while it evaluates compatibility.
For most users already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the upgrade process is designed to be much smaller and less disruptive than a traditional feature update.
Final Thoughts
Windows 11 version 26H2 is the Windows 11 2026 Update and is officially rolling out from September 29, 2026.
The release is different from older Windows feature updates because Microsoft is using an enablement package for existing Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices. Rather than downloading an entirely new operating system, compatible PCs can activate capabilities that have been delivered through previous Windows updates.
The biggest changes are spread across the Start menu, Taskbar, Windows Search, File Explorer, AI features, accessibility, security, Windows Share and device support.
If you want to get Windows 11 26H2 as soon as Microsoft makes it available for your PC, open Settings > Windows Update, turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, and select Check for updates.
